Military Installations in the DMV Area

The Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia metro area is one of the most military-dense regions in the country. Here's a quick overview of the major installations and what to know about living near each one.

Home to Air Force One and the 89th Airlift Wing, Joint Base Andrews is located in Prince George's County about 10 miles southeast of D.C. Surrounding communities like Clinton, Camp Springs, Bowie, and Upper Marlboro offer some of the most affordable housing in the metro area, with homes starting in the mid-$300Ks and short commutes to base. The nearby National Harbor adds dining and entertainment, and Metro access via the Blue and Green lines makes D.C. commutes manageable.

One of the largest Army installations on the East Coast, Fort Belvoir supports dozens of DOD agencies including INSCOM, DLA, and NGA. Popular nearby neighborhoods include Springfield, Lorton, and Woodbridge, where families balance proximity, school quality, and relative affordability in the Northern Virginia market. Townhomes start in the low $400Ks, and the Springfield Metro station offers rail access into D.C.

Situated adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery and the Pentagon, this installation is home to The Old Guard and Henderson Hall. Arlington, Falls Church, and Alexandria offer walkable, urban living with top-rated schools and excellent Metro access — though housing is among the most expensive in the DMV, with single-family homes often exceeding $800K.

The Pentagon is the workplace for roughly 26,000 military and civilian employees, while Naval Support Activity Washington encompasses facilities including the Navy Yard and Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling. Nearby neighborhoods like Crystal City, Capitol Hill, Navy Yard, and The Wharf are among the most transit-friendly in the region, with many service members choosing car-free urban living. Housing ranges from $300K condos to $1M+ rowhomes.

The nation's premier military medical center is located in Bethesda, directly adjacent to a Red Line Metro station. Montgomery County is known for its excellent public schools and strong healthcare community, making it especially popular with military medical professionals. Housing runs higher — townhomes from $450K and single-family homes from $600K and up.

Known as the "Crossroads of the Marine Corps," Quantico hosts The Basic School, OCS, and the FBI Academy. It's one of the most affordable areas in the DMV — homes in Stafford and Prince William County start in the low $300Ks — though the trade-off is distance, sitting about 35 miles south of D.C. The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) offers a commuter rail alternative to I-95 traffic.

Headquarters of the NSA and U.S. Cyber Command, Fort Meade sits halfway between D.C. and Baltimore in Anne Arundel County. Nearby Columbia in Howard County is consistently ranked among the best places to live in Maryland with top-rated schools, while Odenton and Severn offer more affordable options closer to the base. MARC commuter rail provides service to both D.C. and Baltimore.

The DMV is also home to dozens of smaller military and DOD facilities, including the National Guard Bureau and DARPA in Arlington, Coast Guard Headquarters in D.C., the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Defense Health Headquarters in Falls Church, and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory in Adelphi. Many service members PCS'ing to the area are assigned to one of these smaller facilities rather than a traditional base.
